They Were the Women Who Influenced Soul – Now, Hear Their Stories at the Stax Museum
Love soul music? The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is a replica of the Stax recording studio, down to the sloping floor of studio A. The museum features more than 2,000 videos, films, photographs, original instruments used to record Stax hits, stage costumes, interactive exhibits, and other items of memorabilia. Some of the standout exhibits include “Run This Town: Memphis’ Women of Soul, Past and Present.” See it for yourself when you make plans to visit this Tuesday, February 11th!
The Memphis music industry as we know it today would not exist without the contribution of women, both in the studio and the behind the scenes. Within the Memphis R&B world, their stories sometimes get obscured by those of the men who brought prominence to Stax, Royal, and American Studios. Yet, without women like Estelle Axton, Bettye Berger, Natalie Rosenberg, Linda Lucchesi, and Deanie Parker, we might never have discovered Otis Redding, George Jackson, Charlie Rich, or Isaac Hayes.
Their legacy carries on today through the Memphis-centric PR work of Elizabeth Cawein, the community engagement of Tonya Dyson, the benevolence of Kirby Dockery (also known as KIRBY), and the sheer talent of Liz Brasher and Talibah Safiya. With never-before-seen costumes, photographs, and other memorabilia, “Run This Town” tells the stories of 12 amazing Memphis women and how they continue to shape the Memphis music landscape in the 21st century.
Don’t miss out on this exhibit sure to appeal to any soul music fan or history buff. “Run This Town: Memphis’ Women of Soul, Past and Present” will be on view until March 31, 2019. Admission prices to the Stax Museum of American Soul Music range from $10 to $13 for children over the age of 9, senior, military, students, and adults. Members and young children enjoy free admission. For additional information, please call 901-942-7685 or visit www.staxmuseum.com.
